Some Dayton activists are preparing to participate in Friday鈥檚 . The international demonstration is meant to call attention to climate change and prompt political action to mitigate its effects.
The movement was created by students in cities around the world.
Dayton Climate Strike event coordinator Logan Martinez says organizers hope it鈥檚 the start of a longterm campaign for environmental sustainability in the Miami Valley.
鈥淚t鈥檚 going to be an ongoing everyday fight. There鈥檚 all kinds of local environmental issues to dealt with," he says. "We need to get everybody involved on whatever level they can [be].鈥�
Martinez says two Dayton-area protests are planned in connection with the movement.
First, protesters and students are expected to demonstrate in front of the Kennedy Union Fountain at the University of Dayton at noon.
Then, at 4 p.m. activists plan to meet at Sinclair Community College and march to the Dayton Federal Building.
The protests are sponsored in part by the Sinclair Peace Club and the Sustainability Student Leadership Council.
