A bridge connecting Kennedy Heights and Pleasant Ridge will close Wednesday for complete demolition and replacement.
The city's transportation and engineering department said the Kennedy Avenue Bridge near Woodford is 86 years old and needs to be replaced.
The bridge currently carries about 6,000 vehicles a day.
Demolition is expected to start around April 17. The work is a little more complicated because the bridge spans active railroad tracks.
"We recognize how inconvenient the closure will be to residents and commuters in the area," said Transportation and Engineering Director John Brazina. "We will carefully monitor traffic patterns and make adjustments to signal timing and implement other measures to keep traffic moving as safely and efficiently as possible."
The new span is expected to be finished in early November, and all work is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
The $2.9 million project is being funded by a federal grant.
The new bridge will have eight-foot sidewalks, new lights and decorative railings that the city said will incorporate the Kennedy Heights neighborhood logo.
During the closure, drivers will be detoured via Woodford Avenue to Ridge Avenue and Montgomery Road.
