California and New York have both enacted bans of discrimination based on natural hairstyles, bringing state law more into alignment with societal norms.

In California, the law updates the definition of race, referring to hair texture and protective hairstyles, noting that hair can be a proxy for race and that rules against certain types and styles of hair associated with race is racial discrimination.
