Some Republican legislators have said that impeachment charges could be filed against Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O鈥機onnor, who鈥檚 sided with the three Democratic justices in throwing out GOP-drawn legislative and congressional maps. But a key party leader isn鈥檛 taking a position on that.

Bob Cupp was an Ohio Supreme Court justice from 2007-2013, serving alongside O鈥機onnor, a fellow Republican. He鈥檚 now House Speaker and chairing the Ohio Redistricting Commission, which has approved on party-line votes all the maps that the court has rejected.

Cupp was asked after a commission meeting this weekend if he thinks O鈥機onnor should be impeached.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 have any comment on that,鈥 Cupp said.

Fellow commission member and Republican Gov. Mike DeWine said impeachment is 鈥渘ot a good idea.鈥

The Democrat who defeated Cupp in 2012 as he sought re-election to the state supreme court, former justice Bill O鈥橬eill, said he鈥檚 stunned at the idea. Both O'Neill and retired Republican justice Paul Pfeifer said it won鈥檛 happen.
