A judge has shut down a downtown Columbus night club for one year because of violence and criminal activity.

Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein's office said Columbus police followed an order to board up the Aura nightclub, located at 205 N. 5th St., on Thursday.

The club was formerly known as Avalon.

Since Jan. 2023, Columbus police officers and firefighters have responded 78 times to emergency calls at the club, including a fatal shooting, shots fired, fights, burglaries, theft and intoxicated people.

In June, two people were killed and two others were injured in a shooting at the club.

The most recent run for shots fired was last month.

Klein's office said the club's owners constantly violated court orders. The owners also failed to provide licensed security and hire special duty officers.

“I want Columbus to have a vibrant nightlife, but it needs to be safe," Klein said in a statement on Thursday. "Owners cannot violate court orders and continue to see violence and criminal activity associated with their business and expect the city to allow it."

The city filed its first complaint against the club's owners in 2021.

The court ordered the club's liquor license to be placed in safekeeping with the Ohio Department of Liquor Control during the closure. The owners also were fined $5,000.

Franklin County Environmental Judge Stephanie Mingo signed the order to close the club on Wednesday.
