The composer/performer used to be a common thing. Think Mozart, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, and Shostakovich. It isn't as common as it once was, but likes to find and feature those musicians in their concerts.
You can hear a fine example of that on Columbus in Concert at 1:00pm Sunday, as ProMusica is joined by Welch pianist/composer . Watkins' opens the program. During Coda, ProMusica's post-concert conversation, Huw, David Danzmayr, and I discussed the Little Symphony.
Former Columbus mayor Greg Lashutka posed a question to both Huw and David about the musician's role in a tension-filled world.
Also on the program, Watkins performed the Piano Concerto No. 2 by Dmitri Shostakovich, followed by Schubert's Symphony No. 4.
You can hear the complete performance Sunday at 1:00 pm on Classical 101.
